Contracts are completed by playing action cards from your deck to fulfilll the requirements on the contract.
Hire crew and build your ship to add cards to your deck
Ship parts give you permanent abilities and add basic action cards to your deck. Crew are added directly to your deck and have powerful special abilities when played.
Negotiate temporary alliances to complete harder contracts
Big rewards, less risk. Negotiate a split of the rewards with your table-mates and use both of your action decks to complete the most difficult contracts.

How complex is Moonrakers?
Moonrakers BGG 'weight' is just slightly higher than Settlers of Catan. If you've played Catan or anything similar, you won't have a problem with Moonrakers.
Is there a reason my group wouldn't have fun playing Moonrakers?
Moonrakers requires regular negotiation and cooperation in the early and mid game. If your group doesn't like negotiating or working together, you won't have fun.
